Texas Area A Retreads' News

THE TIRE TRACKS

BY THE MEMBERS OF THE TEXAS AREA A RETREADS
MOTORCYCLE CLUB, EDITOR BILL O'BRIEN

Ed Quin pointed out that the current location is almost perfect since the room is quiet and allows us to hold a meeting without screaming to make ourselves heard. Different opinions about the quality of the food surfaced. A decision was reached to appoint a subcommittee to recommend if other locations are viable and desirable. It was agreed that we would still have are normally September meeting at the Blue Bell Cafeteria at the normal time in September. More to come later.

Dave Beverly "stirred up the pot" when he commented on motorcycle riding techniques. Dave "aka Speed Racer" said that all turns can easily be taken at 10 mph over the speed limit and implied that if you didn't ride in that fashion, the fun of riding is drastically diminished. Vince Hefley pointed out that he did not particularly enjoying riding in such a manner and enjoys group riding because of the companionship and camaraderie. Two valid opinions! Two different people! The Texas Area A Retreads have had arguments on group riding techniques since I have been a member. It is always a topic that stirs emotion. My opinion; "Ride your own ride and stay with in your limitations". That makes three opinions now, and there were more expressed at the meeting.

Dave explained how he was taught to take a turn in racing school. Vince objected to the way it was worded. This brought on talk about counter steering. Which lead to leaning verses counter steering, which lead to braking, which lead to turning, which didn't really lead to swerving.... Interesting discussion and all I can say is that I didn't agree with all comments made. On the positive note, I agreed with most statements made during this discussion. We need to do this more often <grin>.

Guess I'm going to hear some comments about my comments when this is read. Oh well! No hard feelings intended.

Ed Malone and Joan Conner surfaced at this meeting. They disconnected there phone and were planning to use a cellular phone exclusively. They were strongly rethinking about getting a "real live wire phone" at the meeting. They built another place to live in on their property and rented out their old house. The postal service kind of messed up their mail.

A membership phone list is included with the newsletter this month. It will not, (repeat WILL NOT), be posted on the newsletter web site. I'm not going to make the same mistake as Jim Stanley did when he originally created the web site.

Monthly Meeting Review

July Monthly Meeting

We had two winners in the 50/50 this month.  Sandy Lawrence won the 50/50 cash prize and Joe Urban won a Retread T-shirt.

Jimmie and Joan Buchanan, Ed & Nickie Terry and Richard Schneider took a few minutes to tell us about their trip to Rolling Thunder.  They estimated 500,000 bikes had participated.  The Terry's and Porter's headed to Nova Scotia following that ride and the others obviously had a lot of fun running through Deals Gap and other great roads on their way back home.

We want to start a GET-TO-KNOW-A-MEMBER Dine-Around.  What we want to do is meet at your house for a few minutes and then go to a nearby restaurant of your choice.  Another option would be to meet at a restaurant near the member's house and have the member lead us to their house afterward for dessert or sit and visit.  Who would like to volunteer for September 23rd or on down the road?  Ed & Nickie Terry have volunteered but have a conflict with our scheduled 4th weekend until October.

Vince Hefley has agreed to be the Activities Director for our group.  Vince has been doing a great job organizing fun rides that are leaving from breakfast Sat. mornings.  Make some suggestions, we are listening.

We are not planning a ride in August because of the heat.  There have been numerous rides leaving after breakfast over the last couple of months so get out of that bed and come on down to breakfast at Kelley's.  There will be several rides during August.

August Monthly Meeting

At the August Monthly Meeting the topic concerned the monthly meeting place. Should the club continue to meet at the Dinner Bell Cafeteria? Two alternatives were initially discussed. They were Hickory Hollow and Frankie Manellas.
