May Meeting Notes:

By Linda Beverly

Oh gosh, now David tells me that I have to write the notes about the meeting. That was nearly three weeks ago and I’ve traveled too many business miles since then to remember much of it. Why didn’t I write this part right after the meeting? Next time he’s out of town and I take over for him would someone remind me that I have to write a report, too.

Three things quickly come to mind from the meeting:

  1. Don Spurlock was coaxed into reporting on his demo ride of the VTX and gave it a thumbs up. I was quite interested in his comments as we’d just looked at it the previous Saturday and for the first time ever a Honda kinda stirred some interest from me. So, for Don to say it passed his test (well, he said those handlebars would have to go) that’s a pretty good endorsement for me.
  2. Don and Candy reported that they were getting ready to hit the road to Road Atlanta, then the Hill Country Rally which signals the beginning of their summer travels. Ahhh, to be retired…
  3. Two new riders joined our ranks, Kent and Jo Ann Watts ride a Road King and Greg and Jana Casey ride a new Goldwing. David is a little suspect of how we recruited two new members right on the spot. Well, it was pretty easy when we threw in T-shirts if they joined right then. So, we were a little carried away but we have two great new couples as a part of Retreads. He’ll probably be more careful scheduling an out of town business trip on Retread meeting nights in the future.

You’re on your own to guess whatever else happened that night. I remember we had a good time and ate pretty well. Sounds just like a Retread gathering doesn’t it! And that’s a rap...LB

May Ride Report

By Dbev

We had one of those great spring mornings for our ride to Jasper. You wouldn’t believe the "long not seen" faces that came to ride. Ed McElwee took a break from his house redecorating to ride his HD. His comment to me just before we got to Jasper was that he had forgotten how much fun riding can be, it had been too long. Prentiss Crowe came to ride with us on his GW and Patrick brought his nephew. We had a new couple ride with us - Rodney and Mary Sturman who are on a new black Valkyrie. As usual, the food was great at the Cedar Tree and, BELIEVE IT OR NOT, I kept my word and rode the speed limits, or pretty close. There are some really fun roads on the way to Jasper so don’t miss the next trip.

Member Report:

I just spoke with Jim Riley (he had bypass surgery) and he said he was getting around pretty well, but still pretty sore. He says he backs various bikes out of the garage and sits on the back porch wishing he was out riding them. Jim says his doctors promised him he could begin riding around the first of July. Give Jim a call – I certainly enjoyed talking to him.

Spoke with Bob Abrasley about his motorcycle adventure in a parking lot and he has 5 screws in his leg and is wearing a stint in place of a cast. Mabel is taking him to work in his wheel chair for half days now and the doctor says Bob should be walking by the end of August. Bob is thinking about converting his 1500 GoldWing into a trike and would be interested in talking with anyone who has some knowledge in that area.

Birthdays For June

6/3 Gary Emmons

6/3 Pete Soullas

6/9 Howard Kramer

6/10 Peggy Sims

6/11 Barbara Schneider

6/21 Cliff Price

I want to call your attention to Cliff Price’s birthday this month to remind you that Cliff was born in 1920 (81). Cliff is the oldest active Retread in the Houston Chapter and is still riding his BMW. I think he is a great example of someone who follows the motto: "You don’t stop riding because you get OLD – You get old because you STOP RIDING"

WEB Report:

We have 56 of the 72 Area A Retread families in with E-mail. Pretty progressive for a bunch of "old folks" isn’t it!!

Gerald Webb has his Kwik-Kamp trailer for sale. It is painted black and can go with all of the "Extra stuff" that goes camping or he will sell it separately. Call Gerald at (281) 491-1463 or E-mail at [email protected]

JUNE 16th RIDE to LAKE SOMERVILLE

Warren Trost has a great ride planned for June 16. In his words – We’re planning to do a leisurely ride out to Sealy then back roads to Chappell Hill and around to the Country Inn in Somerville. Not but about 128 miles, maybe two plus hours, but that should put us in before noon and the crowd. We will do dessert out at our place with Dewey. Then around the lake back down either through Burton or back along scenic 390 to TX 36. I show approximately 131 miles after lunch if one comes back directly from Burton along US 290.
